Dan Blumenthal is a Co-Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of Blue River PetCare. Prior to forming BRP in 2009, Dan was a Founding Partner and Managing Partner of Willis Stein & Partners, a private equity firm. Before that, Dan was a Vice President of Continental Illinois Venture Corporation (now CIVC Partners), also a private equity firm. His first job out of law school was as a Corporate Tax Attorney with Latham & Watkins, an international law firm. Dan received his law degree from Harvard Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and history from Brandeis University. He led the buildup investment of National Veterinary Associates (NVA), a network of veterinary hospitals that became the largest private owner and operator of freestanding veterinary hospitals in the US.
Roy Jain is a Co-Founder and the Chief Operating Officer of Blue River PetCare. In addition to managing hospital operations, Roy is responsible for identifying potential affiliate hospitals, directing due diligence and structuring acquisitions. He has years of transactional and investment management experience as a Private Equity Investor and Investment Banker and has worked with Dan since 1998. Prior to forming Blue River PetCare, Roy was Principal at Willis Stein. Before joining Willis Stein, Roy was in the investment banking division of Credit Suisse First Boston Corporation (now Credit Suisse AG). He received his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematical methods in social sciences and economics from Northwestern.
Ferdie Schmitz is a Co-Founder and the Chief Financial Officer of Blue River PetCare. Ferdie is responsible for all accounting, reporting, tax and administrative matters for Blue River PetCare. He also conducts hospital due diligence and helps affiliated hospitals with ongoing practice management. Before forming Blue River PetCare, Ferdie served as CFO of ParadigmHealth. Beginning in 2003, Ferdie worked closely with Dan during the sale of PersonalPath (a Willis Stein portfolio company) to Paradigm, until the sale of Paradigm several years later. Prior to Paradigm, Ferdie served as Controller of Lifeguard, a large regional HMO, and as a member of Ernst & Young’s (EY) audit practice. Ferdie is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Claremont McKenna College.
The Blue River PetCare Team
Amy Ward joined Blue River PetCare in 2014. She currently serves as Controller. Before joining Blue River PetCare, Amy was a Senior Audit Associate at KPMG in Chicago. Amy is a Certified Public Accountant and earned her bachelor’s degree in accountancy at Miami University.
Phil Lator joined Blue River PetCare in 2014 as its Controller. He currently serves as Vice President of Operations. Before joining Blue River PetCare, Phil was an Audit Manager at BDO in Chicago, where he planned and supervised audits. He also performed work for private equity firm acquisitions, including review of working capital targets. Phil is a Certified Public Accountant and earned both his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in accountancy at Michigan State University.
Keith Waltisperger joined Blue River PetCare in 2012. He currently serves as Director of Business Development. He also provides operational support for clinics in our portfolio. Before joining Blue River PetCare, Keith was a Manager for a veterinary emergency clinic as well as a large multidoctor day practice. Keith received his bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas State University.
Amy Jackson joined Blue River PetCare in 2012. She currently serves as Business Development Manager. Before joining Blue River PetCare, Amy was the Operations Manager at Go Ground transportation specialists. Amy received her bachelor’s degree in applied psychology and a minor in economics from Arizona State University.
Gene Bauer, DVM
Dr. Gene Bauer joined Blue River PetCare in 2010. He currently serves as a Medical Director/Business Development Specialist for two of the Blue River PetCare hospitals in the Annapolis, Maryland, area. In addition to practicing, Gene currently helps to educate prospective selling practice owners regarding the transition process and how partnering with Blue River PetCare can help them achieve their long-term vision for their practice. Before joining Blue River PetCare, Gene practiced medicine at multi-doctor practices in Virginia and Maryland. He received his DVM from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Virginia Tech.
