St. Francis Animal Hospital

Fredericksburg, VA

About St. Francis

St. Francis Animal Hospital (SFAH) is a multi-doctor, small animal practice located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, equipped with a passionate group of veterinary caregivers. In 1994, St. Francis opened its doors to provide veterinary care to the Fredericksburg community and in 2016, after 22 years of being privately owned, the owner of St. Francis made the decision to partner with Blue River PetCare.

Since partnering with Blue River in 2016, St. Francis has grown to be a top-tier veterinary practice within the Fredericksburg community. The initial growth of the practice began when Keri Webb, a longtime St. Francis team member, transitioned to the role of Practice Manager. With her new leadership role, Keri teamed up with the practice’s Medical Director, Dr. Madelyn Gonzalez, to determine what direction they wanted to take the practice. The collaboration between St. Francis’ determined practice leaders and Blue River’s back-office support allowed the practice to reach a new level of success, working together to enhance patient care and become a welcoming place where passionate veterinary professionals can grow and thrive.

Blue River Support

By partnering with Blue River’s support team, St. Francis Animal Hospital received comprehensive support, allowing them to enhance their employee benefits, operational protocols, marketing efforts, and hire additional DVM to help continue to grow their practice.

Human Resources

The addition of Blue River’s HR resources has allowed St. Francis to expand employee benefits, offering them to team members at a more affordable rate.

Recruiting

St. Francis has been able to grow their veterinary team over the years with the help of Blue River’s dedicated Talent Acquisition team, allowing them to not only hire more DVMs, but most importantly, find doctors that are the right fit for their individual practice’s culture.

Operations

Through their partnership with the Blue River Operations team, St. Francis has been able to efficiently manage inventory, expand services, and develop advanced client and patient care protocols. With these operational efficiencies in place, the SFAH team was able to apply for and earn their AAHA accreditation in record time.

Marketing

With the help of BRP’s Marketing team, SFAH has been able to enhance and expand client outreach with a new user-friendly website, digital advertising, branded marketing materials, and a strategic partnership with their local minor league baseball team, the Fredericksburg Nationals, to become more connected with their community.

Hospital Growth

Collaborating with Blue River PetCare’s support team has allowed St. Francis to grow in a variety of ways including the ability to offer more employee benefits, hire additional DVMs, improve operational efficiencies, become AAHA-accredited, and ultimately become more connected to the pet owners within their local community.

More Employee Benefits and Team Members

Prior to Blue River PetCare, the practice had inconsistent PTO policies, no employee healthcare benefits, and no retirement fund options. Keri Webb explains, “I was excited to see where the practice could go with good HR support and a corporate backing. The ability to provide benefits to our staff at a reasonable cost and the ability to change things that weren’t previously working for us have been amazing.” St. Francis team members now have access to a robust healthcare benefits package and the ability to make contributions to a 401k retirement fund with company-match.

By offering a wider variety of employee benefits, St. Francis was in a better position to attract top-tier DVM and support staff candidates to join their team. With better benefits in place and the help of Blue River’s Talent Acquisition team, not only were they able to recruit more veterinarians to work at the hospital, but the right ones, that would help continue to enhance their practice’s culture.

Improving Patient Care & Operational Processes

With the help of Blue River’s Operations team, St. Francis has been able to improve inventory management and patient care. Keri worked alongside the BRP Operations team to overhaul the inventory management at St. Francis to ensure the right medications are on-hand for patients, and in the appropriate amount to avoid inventory waste.

In addition to this, St. Francis has been able to care for more patients on a daily basis by streamlining its patient care and client communications protocols. Keri Webb explains, “We’ve been able to get patients in and out more quickly while providing the same level of care for each patient and ensuring everything is properly documented and communicated to the client.”

With more veterinarians on the team, the practice was also able to offer additional specialized veterinary services. One thing is for certain – the St. Francis team is very diagnostic driven. They love to stay up to date on the latest veterinary care technology and offer a variety of advanced services to their patients. Having a larger variety of services allows the practice to provide the best-fitting veterinary care for each individual patient’s needs.

Becoming AAHA-Accredited

Subsequent of their improved protocols, St. Francis continued its growth by becoming an AAHA-accredited practice in 2020. Keri Webb explains, “Our Regional Operations Manager encouraged us to pursue getting AAHA-accredited, and we were up for the challenge.” St. Francis was so determined to accomplish this goal that they ended up earning their accreditation in only 8 months – a process that typically takes closer to two years to complete.

Maintaining a high standard of veterinary care goes beyond their AAHA accreditation, with all DVMs at the practice also earning their Fear Free Certification® in an effort to provide exceptional care for each and every patient that comes through the door.

Building Clientele

To become more well known in their community, St. Francis teamed up with Blue River’s Marketing department to build their brand recognition and client base. First, the Marketing team helped develop an enhanced online presence for the practice. This started with building a new user-friendly website that was optimized for search engines, like Google, which allows the animal hospital to be easily found when someone is searching online for veterinary care. With the new website in place, Google Ads were implemented to further increase their reach to get potential new clients on their website to learn more about the practice and schedule an appointment. Over the span of a few months, St. Francis had come from page four of Google to page one.

With their enhanced online presence now established, Blue River’s Marketing team helped organize community-focused events for the practice to become better connected with pet owners in Fredericksburg. One of these events was an Open House & Adoption Event – an interactive experience for pet owners to tour the practice, meet the care team, enjoy fun activities for the whole family, grab a bite from a food truck, and adopt pets from local shelters. The BRP Marketing team equipped St. Francis with a variety of vibrant client-facing materials with special offerings to hand out to community members at the event to help increase their client count. Having a consistent presence, whether online or in-person, to promote the veterinary care services St. Francis has to offer has allowed the practice to gain more clients and care for more patients in the community.

Connecting with the Community

The St. Francis team not only provides exceptional care for the pets in their local area but also goes above and beyond to give back to their local community. By working together with Blue River’s Marketing team, they became an Official Partner of their local minor league baseball team – the Fredericksburg Nationals. This strategic partnership includes being the sponsor for the baseball team’s Bark in the Park nights at the stadium, where community members and their canine friends can enjoy a fun evening of baseball. With this partnership, St. Francis has the opportunity to connect with members of the community, capture new clients, and foster their relationships with current clients outside of the practice. St. Francis also tends to bring along their friends from local shelters and rescues to help raise awareness and donations for their causes. To kick-off the fun-filled evening, you may even see a SFAH team member throwing the first pitch!

Total Practice Support

I feel supported daily and know that the work we do is appreciated and recognized by leadership. We have maintained the things that are important to us as a practice, and the clients have not noticed a change since the acquisition occurred, except in all the good ways.

Blue River has supported me and helped make this a desirable place to work. I love that we are still who were 10-years ago when I first walked into this practice, but I also love that we have evolved and grown and gotten rid of the things that did not work for our practice.
